Auris Hybrid gives Toyota a 'new angle'

Toyota launches its British-built compact Auris Touring Sports this month with a segment-first hybrid option to take on estate versions of the Ford Focus, Kia Ceed and VW Golf.

The firm believes the car will be a big hit with fleet drivers because the 1.8 hybrid offers 85g/km of CO2 and 76.3mpg for low 10% BIK (and no VED), as UK MD Jon Williams told BusinessCar: "The hybrid gives us a new angle, offering something that's not already in the market. Business

drivers make up 66-70% of the overall C-segment and the business percentage for compact estates is even higher as D-segment [large family] estate customers look to downsize."

Williams believes fleet sales will account for 63% of all Auris Touring Sports sales with the hybrid model taking 60% overall. Toyota is targeting 1710 Touring Sports sales for 2013 from its July launch and 4345 in its first full year in 2014 (representing roughly a quarter of total Auris sales).

A 67.3mpg and 109g/km CO2 1.4 diesel is expected to take another 20% of sales with the mainly retail 1.3 and 1.6 petrol units making up the final 20%.

The car's price range starts low compared with its main rivals at £15,595 before topping out at £22,845, with decent specification across four trim levels.
