BCA boosts mobile technology offering

Date: 15 February 2013   |   Author: Tristan Young

BCA is investing heavily in mobile website technology to make sure it keeps up with the increasing level of buyers and sellers using mobile devices for business.

One of the key developments will see BCA become the first vehicle remarketing firm to offer buyers the ability to place bids using smartphones and other mobile devices in the second quarter of 2013.

Last year BCA sold 600,000 vehicles in the UK, of which 135,000 were sold online. D'Vidis Jacobs, BCA's commercial director, said: "In terms of e-sales, things are changing. The way cars are searched for is changing and the way we sell cars is changing.

"Buyers want other channels to buy cars and sellers want other channels to sell cars. Our job is to satisfy that demand.

"We're looking to add live streaming to mobiles later this year so that buyers can see and bid in real-time across a 3G network."

Jacobs added the limiting factor was the reliability and speed of the 3G network: "It's a challenge to put this on mobiles. The scary bit is not in our control - it's the connection quality."

According to BCA's technical team, a delay of just 300 milliseconds would stop the system from working because of the fast pace of auction sales.

"However, we should have this by early second quarter this year," said Jacobs. The system won't beam the audio visual element of the Live Online system in order to make sure the pricing information is kept accurate.
