Car manufacturers falling behind on CO2 targets

Only five car manufacturers are in line to hit the EU's 95g/km average emission by 2020, according to new research from PA Consulting. Renault, Toyota, PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat are the only ones not struggling, with premium German manufacturers furthest away.
The consultancy firm called for more EU and government incentives to promote the uptake of electric vehicles, and also pointed out manufacturers need to address the short range of current electric vehicles.
"The EU could also look at multiplying the value of 'super credits [for ultra-low emission vehicles] or - the better option - taking a more incremental approach to targeting emissions reductions, as it has done with the 2015 target," said PA's automotive expert Thomas Goettle.
"This could give carmakers until 2023 - instead of 2020 - before 100% of their fleet needs to be on target for 95g/km of CO2 per kilometre which could prove a more achievable option."
