Glass's: satnavs worth less in used cars

Date: 05 November 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Satnav systems are beginning to lose their worth with prestige used cars, according to Glass's.

Prestige car editor, Richard Crosthwaite, said the used car market was putting less worth in manufacturer-fitted items as a result of advances in smartphone satnav systems: "Manufacturers. have wrapped up their navigation tools in packs (Tech, Media etc) to make them seem better value, but some buyers are starting to realise that the true value lies elsewhere.

"The premiums attached to satnav on a used car are not as strong as they once were, in part due to how quickly the screen and output date. With a much higher cost consequence than upgrading a new phone (which we own anyway) or mobile satnav unit, I suspect this trend will continue."

He added that executive Jaguar XF and Audi Q3 SUV are hot property on the used car market at the moment, and described the XF as "a strong performer of late, especially 3.0D derivatives (and particularly in Portfolio spec)" and Q3 as "a model case of how to protect RVs".

He continued: "When the 2.2 diesel [Jaguar XF] came to market, it was the engine to have and values between the two units closed to parity in many instances, making the 3.0 diesel look value. I expect the premium for 3.0 diesel models to significantly outperform the 2.2 diesel over the next 12 months to re-establish a healthy premium.

"Audi is not pushing supply on [the Q3], and you won't find many special finance deals or large discounting as yet. a rapidly expanding and correctly executed 'niche' product portfolio comes in handy."
