The start point for the best source of fleet information

Government sets out plans for low-emission future

Date: 18 September 2013

The Office for Low Emission Vehicles has set out how it will help increase the uptake of ultra low-emission vehicles, including £500m of guaranteed support between 2015-2020, clarification on long-term taxation, measures to help the uptake of hydrogen models, a new information campaign, and funding to continue the Energy Saving Trust's work with fleets of electric vehicles.

OLEV's Driving the Future Today: A Strategy for Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles in the UK report declared it will "maintain a strong, clear and lasting set of tax incentives for ULEVs until at least 2020", and pledged to involve industry and wider partners in the "process of subsequent development of the tax regime."

The Government department is also promising to work with HMRC to clarify the tax position of ultra-low emission vehicles, and said it will publish a fact sheet in May 2014 to help fleets understand the costs involved in electric and range-extender vehicles.

Other pledges included an update to the Government Buying Standards for Transport by next summer to encourage higher uptake of ULEVs, supporting the creation of a single definitive database of all publicly accessible charging points, and working with local authorities to ensure parking regulations for ULEVs are fit for purpose.

The longer-term alternative of hydrogen fuel cells will also be catered for. OLEV promised to have the Government's plug-in car grant updated to include Hydrogen by next May, and simplify the registration process for hydrogen vehicles from 2015 by removing the need for them to be issued with a Vehicle Special Order.
