Honda announces automatic braking system

Date: 11 April 2013   |   Author: Rachel Burgess

Honda has launched an accident avoidance support system called City-Brake Active System, following in the footsteps of many of its rivals.

Making its debut on the Honda Fit, which is sold in Japan, the new technology has not yet been confirmed for European models.

A spokeswoman said the system was expected in Europe, but had no idea of timeframe or model availability.

The system works when the vehicle is moving at less than 18mph and uses laser radar found in the upper part of the windscreen to detect when a collision is imminent.

If it identifies a high risk of collision, the technology emits audio and visual warnings to the driver. If the driver fails to take action, the system will automatically apply the brakes.

The City-Brake Active System also protects drivers from accidental acceleration at speeds of less than 6mph or from standstill. If the system determines that the driver has pressed too hard on the throttle when another vehicle is within 4m distance ahead, the driver will receive audio and visual warnings and the system will control engine output to restrict the vehicle from moving forward.
