Hyundai pitches hydrogen to fleet operators

Date: 19 March 2013   |   Author: Rachel Burgess

Hyundai is in talks with a number of fleets about uptake of its hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. A limited production run of 1000 ix35s will be made by 2015, with around 100 expected to come to the UK.

A Hyundai spokesperson told BusinessCar at the Geneva motor show that discussions with "a handful of blue-chip companies and government fleets" would continue over the following months: "There is a tender process to go through, of course, but all the 100 vehicles will be in fleet."

With the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure virtually non-existent in the UK, uptake by companies is the most viable way forward because refuelling points can be installed at business sites.

Last year, deputy mayor of London, Kit Malthouse, predicted to BusinessCar that take-up of hydrogen cars would be "led by local authorities and bigger fleets with tough emission targets".
