Motorists whose eyesight is inadequate for driving can now have their license revoked within hours, following new laws introduced by the Government.
Previously, police notified the DVLA in writing or by fax when a driver failed a roadside eye test, which could take up to four days. The new rules mean that the DVLA will be notified electronically, and as a result, a licence can be revoked in a number of hours.
Drivers must be able to meet the eyesight standard for driving by reading a number plate from 20m.
ACPO lead on roads policing, chief constable Suzette Davenport, said: "We are confident this new process will give police the ability to fast-track drivers. likely to cause unnecessary danger."
