Maserati Ghibli: diesel first for performance carmaker

Date: 03 May 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Luxury and performance carmaker Maserati has unveiled its first ever diesel model.

The Ghibli, a four-door saloon which takes its name from a former Maserati produced in the sixties and seventies, is also the cleanest car the firm has ever produced.

Powered by a 275hp 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, it will emit less than 160g/km and return 47mpg when it goes on sale in the UK in autumn. It is tipped to hit 62mph in 6.3secs.

Prices have yet to be announced but the Ghibli is expected to be the most affordable model of Maserati's range and will have a P11D to rival BMW's 5-series.

It will be offered in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive guises and with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A pair of 3.0-litre V6 petrol variants will also be available with 330hp and 410hp respectively.
