Leasing giant Arval has developed an online tool to work out the cost difference between staff using their own car and taking a rental vehicle.
Fleet managers can enter the type of vehicle, actual reimbursement rate or AFR, length of use, and distance and fuel price. These items can be adjusted and the cost of both grey fleet and rental compared.
The online calculator enables fleet mangers to quickly calculate the break-even point of picking rental over grey fleet for any given distance on a cost-only basis. The tool also highlights the additional admin and safety costs of a grey fleet vehicle.
Paul Marchment, the fleet consultant at Arval who designed the calculator, said: "As well as being a safer option, in a great number of cases we see that a short-term rental vehicle is a more cost-effective choice than reimbursing an employee to travel in their own vehicle."
