New naming strategy for Volvo

Date: 22 March 2013   |   Author:

Volvo has confirmed that it will switch to a naming strategy of only using the number 40, 60 and 90 for its models, along with the designations C for coupe, S for saloon, V for estate models and XC for its off-roaders. The move means that the replacements for the executive sector V70 estate and S80 saloon should be badged V90 and S90 when they are replaced around three years from now.

The news has also fuelled rumours of a small off-roader to rival the BMW X1 or Audi Q3, named XC40. Volvo wouldn't comment on speculation, but was keen to point out that the new V40 Cross Country (driven on page 34) is an extension of the regular V40 range, rather than a full XC model, leaving the gap for a model to enter the growing small SUV sector.

The Swedish firm is set to revise the current S80 and V70 models later this year, with details due to emerge ahead of next month's Geneva motor show, while the C70 convertible model could be set to disappear from the line-up during 2014.

The company is also expecting to gain a company car market advantage when the benefit-in-kind bands shift this April, as the V40 will remain in the lowest band thanks to its 94g/km emissions for the D2 diesel model, compared with 99g/km for its Audi, BMW and Mercedes rivals, which will then sit one band higher. "The V40 doesn't look like a low-CO2 car, so we would look to capitalise on that for those people driven by taxation," Volvo national corporate operations manager Selwyn Cooper told BusinessCar.

The firm is also on the verge of launching its first plug-in hybrid car, with the 48g/km V60 plug-in hybrid.
