Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi announce electric car tie-up

Date: 14 November 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Sister companies Renault and Nissan have announced a tie-up with Japanese firm Mitsubishi that will see the manufacturers pool their resources and develop a new small car that can be sold across the world on a "global platform".

There will be a dedicated electric version and the vehicle will be built to the size of a Kei car (a very small vehicle with a low-capacity engine, popular in Japan).

As part of the deal, Mitsubishi is expected to launch a new upper medium and lower medium model, both based on existing Renault platforms.

The agreement will also see the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Mitsubishi sharing further platforms and technologies, particularly in the electric vehicle arena, where all three manufacturers have been pioneered recent models.
