The City of London Corporation has completed a trial of the Nissan e-NV200 as part of its effort to demonstrate environmental responsibility.
The local authority, which provides services for the capital's international financial hub - the 'square mile', tested the electric van on the streets of central London for a week.
Nissan claimed the trial demonstrated the e-NV200, with a range of more than 80 miles, could cover typical daily journeys on one charge.
Delivery company Fedex Express has also trialled the e-NV200 in London and British Gas and Royal Mail have put the van through its paces too.
Meanwhile, Nissan chose the Frankfurt motor show to unveil the e-NV200 electric taxi it has developed for Barcelona.
The Spanish city aims to be the first in the world to implement zero-emission vehicles in public transport, and production of the e-NV200 will begin at the Zona Franca factory in Barcelona in mid-2014.
Nissan invested ?100m (£84m) in the plant, which has resulted in the creation of 700 jobs. Zona Franca will be the single manufacturing facility for the electric vehicle, which Nissan plans to roll out to major conurbations worldwide, both as a taxi and delivery van.
To promote the e-NV200 taxi, Barcelona Council plans to establish a quick-charging infrastructure and introduce privileges to zero-emission operators, such as specific electric taxi stops and preferential queuing at airports and railway stations.
No vans have yet been sold in the UK following the trials, as they are not yet available in the UK.
