Volkswagen Group rolls out electric power and low CO2 technology

Date: 23 May 2013   |   Author: Hugh Hunston

The Volkswagen Group is planning to have electrically powered vehicles across all its model classes "in the coming years" according to its automotive engineer chairman Dr Martin Winterkorn as part of helping to provide a breakthrough for electric motoring.

The group's scientists and engineers are also working on a fuel-saving, ten-speed dual-clutch transmission to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 figures while developing high-performance, high-output diesel engines capable of delivering 134hp per litre.

Providing his vision of future developments and solutions to environmental issues Dr Winterkorn said high-efficiency diesel and petrol engines were likely to be offered in the market alongside electric and hybrid powertrains over the medium and long term.

Within this framework the multi-brand VW Group is working towards helping lower the European new car fleet's CO2 emission average to 95g/km by 2020.

Having improved fuel consumption across group TDI and TSI engines by 30% since 2000, Winterkorn committed the company to a further reduction of 15% by 2020 using improved combustion processes, lightweight design and reduced friction levels plus thermal management.

Meanwhile plug-in hybrid versions of the VW Golf, Passat, Audi A6 and Porsche Cayenne will join production Porsche Panamera and Audi A3 e-tron counterparts.
