Business car users at fault for half of all accidents

Company car drivers are at fault for almost half of all accidents involving business vehicles, according to top BC50 company Lex Autolease.

The firm analysed its accident management fleet's figures from 2013 to find fleet drivers were at fault for 49% of the 44, 448 recorded accidents in the UK last year.

Lex Autolease said just under a quarter of all accidents (24%) were caused by business drivers colliding with a third party. The firm said over 3000 drivers crashed into the back of a third party vehicle, while over 2000 hit another vehicle while reversing.

The 2014 BC50 leader said businesses paid out more than £26 million in excess insurance payments as a result of the accidents, with the firm suggesting companies need to raise their driving standards.

"These figures are certainly food for thought, and it is clear that businesses need to do more to improve the driving standards of their employees. Road safety is paramount, of course, but there are additional economic benefits to be reaped from educating drivers to act more responsibly on the roads," said Richard Harper, head of accident services at Lex Autolease.
