Business sales double for Nissan's Leaf

Date: 03 November 2014

Fleet sales of Nissan's Leaf nearly doubled in September, compared with the same month last year, as the car's UK business buying element reached almost one third of overall registrations.

Recording the highest overall monthly Leaf total in a European market, British Leaf volumes for September climbed to 851, with 263 or 31% classified as business sales, against 133 units in September 2013.

The Leaf's position as the best-selling all-electric fleet car has been consolidated since production of the five-door hatchback started in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in April 2013. Nissan's corporate sales director Barry Beeston said the Leaf, which entered the UK market in March 2011, had attracted a wide fleet clientele from large corporates to SMEs.

According to figures from the DfT, 5059 Government plug-in car grants were allocated between July and September this year. The grant reduces the price of plug-in vehicles by up to £5000 for cars and £7000 for vans.

The DfT claims the figure is more than double the number of grants for the previous three-month period (2726 claims made) and almost a third of all of grants since the scheme was launched in 2010. By the end of September 16,149 claims were made and the strength of growth makes the UK stand out as a leader on green technology.

The Government body also claims there are over 17,000 grant-funded ULEVs (ultra low emissions vehicles)
on the UK's roads.
