BVRLA gives thumbs up for Go Ultra Low scheme

The Government's just-launched Go Ultra Low campaign, designed to increase acceptance of low- and zero-emission cars, has been welcomed by BVRLA leasing body chief executive Gerry Keaney.
The scheme is a joint initiative between the Government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles and car makers BMW, Nissan, Toyota and Vauxhall, which are all selling hybrid and electric products.
"It is encouraging to see the Government joining forces with the motor industry to showcase a range of attractive, ultra low-emission vehicles," said Keaney.
"This campaign will raise awareness of the benefits of driving ultra low-emission vehicles and dispel many misconceptions. We expect it will boost demand for new and used electric cars and vans."
The initiative, which includes a website (www.goultralow.com) and the promise to invest £9.3m for installing extra charging points, was launched by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Mike Hawes also welcomed the move.
"The Go Ultra low campaign will help the public understand how these new cars work and how they could be a perfect fit for their personal, business or fleet needs," he said.
The move comes after the BVRLA set up an 'expert panel' of fleet industry representatives, which at the end of last year suggested a range of initiatives for the Government to take up.
These included tax incentives for charging infrastructure installation, subsidised or free electric vehicle parking, having an emissions-based element for privately owned cars that fall into the AMAP vehicle tax regime, and bringing back 100% first-year allowances on leased or rented ultra low-emission vehicles.
