The start point for the best source of fleet information

Call for common technology platform

Date: 13 January 2014

Car manufacturers need to develop a common data platform in order to maximise the use of future technologies, according to Chevin.

The fleet software specialist says that some of the sophisticated internet connectivity finding its way into modern cars would be of more value to business car fleets if different vehicles could report into the same fleet software.

"A connected car could report on its own fuel consumption performance in all kinds of different driving conditions and measure this against what could be achieved with a slightly different, idealised driving style," said Chevin managing director Ashley Sowerby.

"This information is much more useful if it can be easily imported into a tool, such as fleet management software, that allows the data to be interrogated for useful patterns and trends, or compiling a report that is easily understood."

Sowerby is calling for a single data format that would cover information including a vehicle's speed, position, fuel consumption and major mechanical components, warning that at present to compare three different cars, an interface for each would need to be written for each into the fleet's management software.

"From a fleet point of view, the usefulness of connected cars lies in their ability to collect information about their own operation and then make that data available for management use," continued Sowerby. "It could diagnose and report its own faults, even booking itself into a dealership for a repair to be carried out after checking with the driver's diary. The potential is enormous."
