DfT figures show UK traffic increase

Date: 27 November 2014

Traffic on UK roads has increased by 2.2% to 77.9 billion miles year-on-year in Q3, according to new statistics from the Department for Transport.

Car and light goods vehicle traffic increased by 1.4% and 6.9% respectively and traffic volumes increased across all road classifications.

RAC Business Services spokesman Simon Williams said: "The increase in light good vehicles, or 'white van man', is a really encouraging sign that small businesses and tradesmen, the lifeblood of the UK economy, are thriving."

He added: "Motorways [in particular] are vital for business and increased use indicates more activity, which has already been suggested by the latest rise in GDP for the third quarter of 2014.

"However, it does put extra strain on parts of the road network adjoining motorways that are not able to cope."
