Electric Smart lives on despite new model's imminent arrival

Smart has confirmed that the electric version of its current-generation Fortwo will continue on sale for the next two years, even though the regular petrol and diesel version is being replaced in early 2015.
The Smart Fortwo ED has a range of 90 miles and costs £20,075 for the Coupe model, rising by £1500 for the Cabrio, both before the Government's £5000 plug-in car grant.
The new Fortwo and Forfour coupe models launch in February, with a cabrio version expected by the end of 2015, although the four-seat Forfour is available with a retractable canvas sunroof.
There's no plan as yet for a diesel Fortwo or Forfour this time around, meaning emissions have a best of 93g/km for the lower-powered 71hp Fortwo, rising to 97g/km for the 90hp Fortwo, while the larger and heavier Forfour version has emissions of 97g/km and 99g/km respectively.
There will also be a 60hp entry level engine introduced during 2015, though detail on that model is still scarce.
The new Smart range is part of a joint venture with Renault, with the French firm's Twingo a sister car to the Smart.
