Fiat's next-generation Scudo to be based on Renault Trafic

Date: 04 August 2014

Renault and Fiat have entered a partnership that will see the French brand supply its Italian counterpart with a medium-sized van based on a Renault platform.

Renault said it will manufacture the new vehicle alongside the Trafic in France from the second quarter of 2016. Fiat will develop the styling of its version of the van, which will carry the Fiat Professional badge.

Although neither Renault nor Fiat will officially confirm it at this stage, the new model will be a replacement for the current Fiat Scudo and based on Renault's new Trafic, which is also sold by Opel/Vauxhall as the Vivaro.

The present-generation Scudo arrived in 2007 as part of a joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroen, which also spawned the Citroen Dispatch and Peugeot Expert.

Fiat announced last year that it had terminated the agreement with PSA with a view to taking a new direction in the medium van sector when the Euro6 model arrives in 2016.

Fiat currently also works with PSA on its Ducato large van, and takes the lead on the engineering of the vehicle also sold as the Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer, as well as working with General Motors on light vans, as the Vauxhall Combo is a reworked version of Fiat's Doblo Cargo.

But in the latest tie-up it will be using an existing Renault platform rather than being involved in the engineering. More details will emerge over the next 18 months
