Land Rover has revealed its new Discovery Sport, the first member of the Discovery 'family'. It will launch in the UK in Q2 in 2015 priced from £32,395.

It will be four-wheel drive only from launch and will be equipped with Jaguar-Land Rover's 190hp 2.2 litre SD4 diesel engine. Nine-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions will be available.

A two-wheel drive 119g/km CO2 eD4 engine will join the range later in the year, costing under £30,000. Land Rover will offer a service plan offering five years / 50,000 miles worth of servicing for a one-off fee of £499.

There are no current plans for performance or alternately fuelled versions.

Land Rover claims that it is the "world's most versatile and premium compact SUV", with class-leading versatility, thanks to its 5+2 seating plan.

The Discovery Sport can be specified with four 12V power points and six USB charging points for all three rows. Safety-wise, pedestrian airbag and autonomous emergency braking as standard. Land Rover also claim that the Discovery Sport can wade to 600mm.

On the face of it, the Discovery Sport could be construed as the replacement for the Freelander. A Land Rover spokesman confirmed that the Freelander's life "will naturally come to the end of its life at the start of 2015." The current Freelander is priced from £27,000 and the 2.2 diesel emits 165g/km CO2.

"Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director and chief creative officer.

"I'm proud to say we've achieved that; Discovery Sport's dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market," said McGovern.
