Low emissions still tops company car desirability list

Date: 12 August 2014

CO2 emissions remain the chief priority for those calling the shots on setting the criteria for a company car list, according to new research carried out by GE Capital Fleet Services, with 62% of all questioned placing emissions at the very top of their list.

Next in the fleets' shopping list is 'fitness for purpose', before the monthly rental cost and cost per mile are considered. Brand image and safety features, meanwhile, were fifth and sixth respectively in the fleet decision-makers' priorities.

GE Capital Fleet Services boss, Gary Killeen said he's not surprised CO2 and fitness for purpose continue to dominate: "The results are very much consistent with those that we have seen right through the recession. Company car choices in 2014 remain very much based on providing vehicles that are tax- and fuel-efficient."
What is interesting, said Killeen, is that CO2 emissions and fitness for purpose, despite remaining the highest priorities, have fallen in popularity, while 'brand image' has risen through the ranks to fifth in the list.

"The fact that brand image has increased in popularity is perhaps a sign that companies are starting to think about recruitment and retention and becoming more concerned about presenting attractive car choices as the jobs market improves."
