Mercedes reveals GLE coupe ahead of 2015 launch

Date: 10 December 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Mercedes has revealed its new GLE coupe, a BMW X6 crossover rival from the German car maker. It will go on sale in the UK in early summer.

From launch, three engines - a 3.0-litre 258hp diesel engine, a 3.0-litre 333hp petrol unit and a 3.0-litre 367hp petrol unit that will carry the AMG badge, will power it.

BusinessCar contacted Mercedes for more information on CO2 figures but was told more specification details will be released nearer to the launch date.

The new GLE will be taking on the X6 coupe, in its xDrive30d guise. The X6 is powered by a 258hp 3.0-litre diesel unit which emits 157g/km CO2 and returns a claimed 47.1 mpg. The X6 costs from £51,150.

Mated to the engines will be Mercedes' 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox and the firm's 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system. The lower model and AMG models use a 50:50 even torque distribution system.

The 4x4 also comes with Mercedes' Airmatic air suspension with continually variable damping system which Mercedes said guarantees stable driving conditions.

Safety-wise, the GLE is equipped with pedestrian detection systems as well as Cross Traffic Assist, active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist, while night-time driving is helped by the firm's LED Intelligent Light System.
