New car delivery times dragged out by strike action

Date: 28 March 2014   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Delivery times of popular new cars could be drawn out if potential industrial action by drivers of HGV transporters takes place. Drivers for Stobart Automotive, which has vehicle-delivery contracts with a large number of carmakers, are members of the Unite union and have threatened to strike over a row about pay.

The company has been accused of bringing in drivers from other parts of the business to undercut wages and failing to offer a pay offer for 2014.

Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: "We have given the company a number of opportunities to avoid a strike.

"The drivers feel that without progress on Friday, they have no choice but to announce industrial action in order to protect their livelihoods.

"Despite record car sales, Stobart Automotive is refusing to make a pay offer while it undermines our longstanding agreements by bringing in drivers on lower terms and conditions.

"If a strike goes ahead it will cause major disruption to the delivery of new cars to showrooms across the country.

"We urge the haulier to take this opportunity to make progress towards resolving this dispute."

The group has contracts with Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, General Motors, Mazda, Toyota, Renault, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Nissan, Dacia, Honda, Mitsubishi, Chevrolet, VW, Skoda, Audi and Chrysler, and it is anticipated that lead times could be seriously impeded if the action goes ahead.
