Paper counterpart abolition delayed

The DVLA has confirmed it will not be abolishing the paper counterpart of the driving license on 1 January 2015, as had previously been planned.
A statement from the agency said timetables are "under discussion", though a spokesman for the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association told BusinessCar that it will come through before the end of parliament, which means late spring is a likely timescale.
Drivers are able to check their own details online for free via the View Driving Licence service, and can print a PDF of the information currently held on the counterpart, and generate a one-time code to allow third parties such as rental firms to access licence details.
The DVLA is also developing what it called a "trusted partner " service, where third parties will be able to check driver licence information, provided they have the driver's permission. "The DVLA is working with representatives of the car hire industry, employers, fleet operators and companies offering licence checking services on behalf of larger employers to develop this service," said the statement.
