The start point for the best source of fleet information

Parking blunders cost motorists £716m

Date: 28 November 2014

Car parking blunders account for £716m worth of damage in the UK, highlighting the importance of parking sensors for fleet cars.

According to research from accident support provider Accident Exchange, the average repair bill for a car parking accident is £1428.

The firm said car parking prangs were only second to rear-end shunts as the most common kind of car incident.

Parking collisions have increased by 4% since 2010 with 1373 car parking collisions each day.
The research found most parking incidents take place at slow speeds but that does not stop motorists damaging doors, wheels, bumpers and other parts of the bodywork.

Accident exchange claimed that a contributing factor is that today's larger vehicles are now squeezing into parking spaces of only 237.5cm in width - the average car park space size - leaving drivers of the latest Golf for instance, at 203cm wide, with only 17.3cm either side. In comparison, the original Golf mk1 was just 171cm wide.

Liz Fisher of Accident Exchange said: "Drivers are having to squeeze their larger cars into smaller spaces."
