RAC aiming to boost fleet management business

Date: 06 November 2014   |   Author:

Motoring services provider RAC wants to increase its fleet business by promoting its Business Club and telematics services to customers in need of an affordable fleet management system.

The Business Club has been live since April. It enables users to access an online management system including driver and fuel reports on each driver. Managers can book cars in for an MoT or service and it's possible to see if each driver has breakdown cover.

Matt Dallaway, RAC senior operations manager, said: "We've taken all the data we had already been collecting to see what we can provide for fleet managers."

RAC is hoping to attract small to medium-sized businesses with fleets of vehicles which could otherwise not afford to buy their own fleet management system.

Existing breakdown, telematics or fuel card customers gain access to Business Club as an added service for free. New customers are allowed a 30-day free trial followed by a £100 one-off fee, plus a monthly charge of 50p per vehicle if they are not covered by one of RAC's three services. If a business buys breakdown, telematics or fuel card services from RAC, there are no extra charges.

RAC has also merged its Business Club membership card with its fuel card business, so customers can use one card for both services.

Dallaway said RAC would include group discounts with Business Club membership, and has already negotiated a 40% discount with Autoglass for windscreen repairs. RAC is working on getting deals with leasing companies, driving licence checks, hotels and travel providers.

Dallaway is hoping RAC's telematics business will unlock opportunities beyond tracking and monitoring drivers.

He said: "We want to move from a reactive breakdown solution to being proactive. We can use telematic data, the same system our recovery vehicles are using, to provide us with information on the car to see what might be wrong before it happens.

"That data could also be really useful in locating the vehicle wherever it might be, so there's no need to explain where you are."

RAC is planning to launch a telematics insurance product for businesses next year as part of its product expansion.

Other new innovations recently introduced by RAC as part of its breakdown service include a mobile charging unit for electric vehicles that have run out of power and a universal fit spare wheel.
