RAC launches mobile tyre fitting service

Date: 25 April 2014   |   Author: Martin Gurdon

The RAC has rolled out a new mobile tyre-fitting service across 10 urban areas as it gears up to deal with a predicted 120,000 breakdowns during 2014 caused by punctures where the car doesn't have a spare wheel.

The company dealt with 356,927 tyre-related breakdowns during 2013 - 14% of its call-outs - but as the firm claimed that as half of new cars now sold do not have a spare tyre for weight-saving reasons, it has established a fleet of 10 Mercedes Sprinters fitted with tyre replacement equipment and a selection of the most popular rubber to complement existing patrols.

"We have developed the service in response to demand from our fleet and lease business," said RAC head of technical Phil Ryan, who said the initial trial in Birmingham and Manchester had proved popular with business customers.

"Time off the road costs money and to small and large businesses a dedicated tyre fitting service offers the best solution to keep their vehicles moving".
