SMMT appoints new president for 2015

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has appointed Gareth Jones, managing director of ebm-papst Automotive and Drives UK, as its next president.

Jones takes over from Tim Abbott, former BMW Group UK managing director, on 1 January. Abbott has recently taken up a post with BMW in South Africa but and now becomes SMMT deputy president. He was president at the SMMT for two years.

Jones has more than 26 years' experience within the ebm-papst group, operating in the manufacturing supply chains of global industries including automotive, telecommunications, rail, consumer electronics, white goods and retail.

Three new vice presidents have also been appointed to support Jones - Penny Randall, marketing director, Renault Trucks UK, Tony Walker, deputy managing director, Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK), James Wright, managing director, Nissan Motor (GB).

They join previous vide presidents - Mark Ovenden, chairman and managing director, Ford of Britain, John Neill CBE, chairman and group chief executive, Unipart Group and Ralf Speth, CEO, Jaguar Land Rover.
