Specsavers launches eyecare e-voucher for business drivers

Date: 17 November 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Specsavers has launched an eyecare e-voucher aimed specially at companies with employees who drive.

Costing £35, the optician's Driver Eyecare e-voucher covers a full eye examination as well as a comprehensive health assessment, which looks for signs of sight-related conditions and other health problems like high blood pressure.

If the employee's eyesight is not deemed fit for driving, the voucher automatically covers the cost of glasses from the firm's £45 range or a £45 contribution to a pair of glasses. If corrective glasses are not needed, the driver is provided with a pair of non-prescription sunglasses.

According to the company, a third of all collisions involve someone who is driving for work purposes, with 20 people being killed and another 220 seriously injured every week in collisions involving those who drive for work.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has calculated that after deep-sea fishing and coal mining driving 25,000 miles a year on business is the third most dangerous activity in the UK.

"Poor eyesight is obviously a huge risk to all road users and the figures show that it is often not addressed. Loss of sight can occur very gradually and can easily go unnoticed by the individual," said Suzanne Randall, corporate account manager for Specsavers.

"With employers having a duty of care for all employees, providing regular eyecare is the best way for an employer to safeguard their drivers and themselves," said Randall.
