Supermarket fuel price war ignites again

Date: 28 October 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Three of the largest supermarkets in the UK have cut their fuel prices thanks to a fall in wholesale costs.

Tesco - which claims it has the largest network of UK supermarket filling stations - is cutting the price of petrol and diesel by up to 2p a litre at all of its stations.

A spokesman for Tesco told BusinessCar the company doesn't have a national price and so the price can vary from region to region.

Morrisons is also following suit by cutting the price of both petrol and diesel by up to 2p per litre. "Recent wholesale price drops have allowed us to pass these savings on to the customer," said Mark Todd, petrol director at Morrisons.

Rival Asda will charge a maximum of 120.7p per litre of unleaded and 124.7p per litre of diesel at its 240 forecourts thanks to what it calls a "national price cap on fuel."

Motoring organisation the RAC supported these price cuts. "This is without doubt making the major cost of motoring cheaper than it's been for well over three years," said Simon Williams, fuel spokesman at the RAC.

"The average price of petrol was already at the 125p a litre mark and diesel 129p so the latest rounds of cuts should serve to send this much lower and produce some great value forecourt prices. As a result there should some very positive benefits for both private motorists and businesses alike," said Williams.

This follows on from recent a recent reduction in cost where Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's took 1p off the price of unleaded and 2p off the price of diesel earlier this month.
