Telenav aims to take on TomTom and Garmin with free nav app

Date: 19 November 2014   |   Author:

Telenav has launched a new free GPS navigation app called Scout to rival offerings from the likes of TomTom and Garmin.

The app is called GPS navigation and Maps - Scout and is available on iOS and Android devices. It includes offline use for one country, static speed camera warnings, as well as traffic incident information from Inrix to inform users of potential delays.

The app makes money from drivers adding additional features like real-time traffic updates, access to offline maps for other countries, continents or globally.

Marcus Thielking, managing director at Telenav and co-founder of skobbler, was very confident of Scout's ability to take on TomTom and Garmin at their own game offering a "superior package for free".

Google Maps is also a free app which includes GPS navigation turn-by-turn navigation for cars but Thielking said Scout differs by allowing users to store journeys offline for one country.

Offline maps with Scout can be installed, deleted and re-installed as needed.
