Tesla reveals dual-motor Model S and autopilot hardware

Date: 13 October 2014   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Tesla has revealed a dual electric version of its Model S saloon. It is the world's first dual electric production car.

The dual electric version of the car is offered with both the 60kWh or 85kWh battery. It has a motor on each axle, which independently controls torque to the front and rear wheels.

Tesla makes a bold claim that the dual motor Model S has "the most capable road holding and handling of any vehicle ever produced."

The firm also claims that the dual motor versions gain an additional 10 miles of what it calls "highway driving range" compared to its rear motor Model S counterparts.

Deliveries of the dual motor Model S's will commence in spring 2015, with prices announced nearer to the time.

The American company also announced the introduction of a standard hardware package that enables autopilot technology.

Due to legislation in the UK, only the speed limit and lane assist features will be included, however a Tesla spokeswoman explained to BusinessCar that Tesla is "future-proofing" the cars and that more features will be available as when the legislation is passed.

Every Tesla Model S has 3G SIM cards pre-installed, which allows the company to remotely update the software without the need to visit a dealer.

Autopilot features outlined for US customers includes the car automatically opening a garage via Tesla's Homelink software, reversing out of said garage, as well as the car setting the temperature and pre-selecting what Tesla calls "your favourite morning news stream."

The American company says the "introduction of this hardware is just the first step for autopilot technology in the Model S," and the firm plans to deliver a number of safety features that uses digital control of motors, brakes and steering to avoid incidents.
