Yorkshire EV scheme rolls out first fast charger at Meadowhall

Date: 28 November 2014   |   Author:

Electric Vehicles Inmotion, the Yorskhire EV scheme, has added its first Npower fast charger at Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield.

The new charging point is part of the scheme's plans to roll out more charging points in south Yorkshire.

Electric Vehicles Inmotion is a collaboration between energy company, Npower, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and the South Yorkshire local authorities of Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

The scheme is funded through the Department of Transport and backed by the four local authorities in South Yorkshire and it means local businesses can get an additional discount on electric cars and vans, as well as a subsidy to install a charge point at their premises.

The rapid charger at Meadhowhall is capable of charging an electric vehicle to an 80% charge within 20-30 minutes.

Phil Evans, head of e-mobility at Npower, said: "[The new charge point] is part of the long-term Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme that is designed to help local businesses take advantage of the real sustainable and commercial benefits electric vehicle fleets can bring.

"We are working hard alongside the local councils to ensure the transition to electric powered fleets is smooth and effective, and the infrastructure support required, such as rapid charging points, is essential in this process.

"We have already seen real interest in the scheme and we aim to have up to 40 local companies signed up to Electric Vehicles Inmotion! by March 2015."
