ACEA revises car sale forecast upwards

Date: 09 July 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The European Automotive Manufacturers Association, ACEA, has revised its forecast upwards for car sales growth in Europe to 5% following year-on-year growth of 6.8% during the first five months of 2015.

ACEA said last year was a turning point for the industry in Europe as it marked the first positive result since the financial crisis in 2008.

A record for European car sales was set in 2007 when almost 16 million new cars were sold. If the 5% prediction is correct, 13 million this year.

ACEA previously predicted 2% growth for this year.

"Despite this positive forecast, we cannot afford to become complacent," said ACEA secretary general, Erik Jonnaert. "Europe still faces challenging times. Today EU car sales are behind those of China and of the United States, where sales levels have now recovered to pre-crisis levels."

"This is why it is now more important than ever to ensure that the competitiveness of our industry - one of Europe's most vital strategic sectors - remains high on the European and national policy agendas," said Jonnaert.
