Bentley confirms Bentayga name for large 4x4

Date: 13 January 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Bentley's new large 4x4 will go on sale next year, and there will be a plug-in hybrid version available.

The production model follows on from the EXP 9 F concept car (second picture, above), which was first launched at the Geneva motor show in 2012, but after a negative reaction from the industry it was redesigned and was green-lit for production in 2013.

Details are thin on the ground at the moment - we'll get more information on its pricing and emissions throughout the year at motor shows.

A spokesman confirmed the Bentayga will initially launch with a conventional engine - likely to be either the luxury car maker's W12 or V8 engines  - and a plug-in hybrid model will launch in 2018.

Bentley hasn't ruled out a Bentayga powered by diesel either. The spokesman said "there is no confirmation of a diesel model, but we're looking into it."

The lead markets will be Asia, the US and Russia. It will help Bentley increase its global sales outside of traditional markets such as Europe.

The name pays homage to the Roque Bentayga, a mountain in the Canary Isles.

"Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world - combine the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments," said Wolfgang Durheimer, CEO of Bentley.
