BMW reveals 77g/km X5 plug-in hybrid

BMW has confirmed that its X5 will be the first plug-in hybrid from its core model range and will have a CO2 output of 77g/km.
The X5 xDrive40e comes with a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine is mated with a lithium ion battery for a combined power output of 313hp. BMW says the X5 is capable of 85.6mpg.
The hybrid is now the lowest CO2 X5 model available and will be in the 13% benefit-in-kind taxation bracket for the 2015/16 tax year. This compares to the 149g/km CO2 in the X5 sDrive25d SE which would be in the 27% BIK bracket in the next tax year.
The X5 can be driven on zero emissions for 19 miles and it takes just under four hours to fully charge from a domestic plug socket or 2 hours 45 minutes with a 3.5kW wallbox. Charging progress can be checked on a graphic displayed in the vehicle's instrument cluster or on a smartphone using the BMW Remote app.
In all-electric drive mode, the vehicle is capable of an electronically limited top speed of 75mph.
The new model comes with an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and four-wheel drive as standard.
The high-voltage battery is housed underneath the luggage compartment floor and takes out 150 litres of storage space in the boot compared to the standard X5, reducing it to 500 litres with the seats up or 1870 litres with the seats folded flat.
The hybrid X5 comes with an eDrive button on the centre console that lets drivers tailor their driving experience according to their own preferences and situation. This includes an auto mode which uses both the engine and the electric motor, Max eDrive, which is the all-electric driving mode setting or Save Battery, which conserves or builds up charges the battery for use later on.
The X5 xDrive40e also features as standard the Driving Experience Control switch, just like the conventionally powered model variants of the X5. This can be used to activate the vehicle set-up modes Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro.
The most noticeable design differences on the hybrid model include the charging connection for the high-voltage battery located in the left front wing, as well as twin-tailpipe exhausts with trapezoidal tips. The X5 xDrive40e also features the eDrive logo on the tailgate.
Standard specification includes self-levelling rear air suspension, 2-zone automatic climate control with auxiliary heating and ventilation system, satellite navigation, DAB, Xenon headlights, LED fog lights, an automatic tailgate, Dakota leather upholstery, heated front seats, and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats.
The navigation system gives drivers the option of calculating a hybrid-specific Eco Pro route to an entered destination, which makes allowance for factors such as the traffic situation, the route profile and driving style.
The new plug-in hybrid X5 goes on sale this autumn and prices will be announced closer to the on sale date.
