Bosch launches predictive pedestrian collision technology

Technology supplier Bosch has created a driver assistance system, which it claims can reduce the number of car collisions with pedestrians in cities by 58%.
The system allows vehicles to prevent collisions by stopping vehicles when pedestrians cross their path.
The driver aid uses a camera to capture information about the vehicle's environment, which is analysed 10 times a second. If the software detects that a pedestrian has stepped into the road and a collision is imminent, it will attempt to stop the vehicle or help the driver take evasive action.
The German company has also developed a system which senses when drivers are distracted, using cameras in the vehicle's interior which can tell if the motorist's eyes are on the road.
If the driver is not looking at the road, the vehicle can alert the driver using lights on the dashboard.
Bosch said that insights gained in developing the technology will assist the company's development of driverless vehicles in the future.
