BVRLA to launch insurance claims fraud study into rental industry

Date: 30 January 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The BVRLA has announced it is partnering with law firm Hill Dickinson to undertake an analysis of insurance claims fraud within the vehicle rental industry.

The firms said the findings will be used to create an industry-wide solution to managing future risk and support the detection and prevention of fraudulent claims.

The BVRLA said it selected Hill Dickinson as a partner because it has experience in the sector and a proven track record in fraud detection and prevention. Hill Dickinson undertook similar research in 2014 and said it uncovered "significant cross-sector fraud."

The BVRLA said all of its members have been asked to provide their 2014 claims data to the law firm. Hill Dickinson said each rental company would receive a case-by-case assessment of its 2014 claims experience, with the study aiming to identify branch-specific ideas to help renters focus on fraud prevention.

The partners said the combined research would outline areas of focus for the industry. HD said the research will also provide details of fraud rings, accident management companies and serial claimants that are targeting the sector, along with regional hotspots.

The firms will publish their findings in May 2015.

"This data-sharing initiative is an excellent opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the size and scope of fraudulent insurance claims in the daily rental industry and any trends that are emerging," said Gerry Keaney, BVRLA chief executive.

"By sharing historical information with Hill Dickinson, the rental industry can make further gains in reducing its risk profile and lowering insurance premiums," said Keaney.
