Cambridge next to look at WPL

Date: 20 February 2015

Cambridge will launch a consultation into a range of transport measures including a workplace parking levy this summer as it attempts to curb congestion in the city centre.

"The primary issue is that we already have too many cars coming into the centre in peak times and that will only grow," leader of Cambridge city council Lewis Herbert told BusinessCar.

The city, which has £100m of Government money to find solutions for its congestion gridlock, is said to be against a full congestion charge because the problems are at peak times, especially in the evenings, rather than through the day, which is why a WPL designed to encourage people not to use their cars for commuting, will form part of the summer consultation.

The council is also looking at travel plans for the larger schools, colleges and businesses in the city, and Herbert admitted that informal conversations had already been had with Nottingham council, which pioneered the WPL.
