DfT issues information for cross-channel travelers

Date: 30 July 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The Department for Transport has issued advice for those travelling to the continent via Calais.

The Government department said there is an ongoing possibility of disruption to cross-Channel services as a result of industrial action and increased migrant activity in and the French port.

It is advising passengers check with operators for service statuses before travelling or making alternative arrangements.

Passengers looking for compensation are advised to contact ABTA, a travel association that represents travel agents and tour operators.

The DfT has also listed cross-channel operators and routes other than Dover-Calais.

The Government said it is working closely with its French counterpart to "seek an urgent return of normal services", while it said it has deployed extra border force staff and sniffer dogs to northern France for both tourist and freight traffic.

It is providing extra funding towards increasing security, including extra fencing, at both the ferry and Eurotunnel terminals.

It claimed more than 39,000 attempts to cross the channel illegally were prevented in 2014-15, more than double the previous year.
