The start point for the best source of fleet information

DVLA opens vehicle record checking service with 12 fleets

Date: 04 February 2015   |   Author:

The DVLA has started private testing of its free online View Vehicle Record checking service with 12 UK fleets.

The 12 fleets range from small to large sized businesses, which the DVLA says helps to give a good representation of the industry. Tusker is one of the fleets involved in the testing.

Once private testing is complete, the new online service will transition into an open public testing phase, before being launched in the spring.

The system gives fleet operators on the DVLA's fleet scheme the opportunity to view details on all vehicles within their fleet via a login process.

Fleets taking part in the test have the option to download information in a 'Comma Separated Value' file (CSV) which is similar to an excel spreadsheet.

DVLA fleet scheme operators can use this service as part of their fleet management administration process or to view information on their drivers.

The online service provides alerts to fleets when vehicles need taxing in the coming month, when MoTs are due for renewal for particular vehicles and for when a vehicle reaches a certain age.

Fleets can search through their fleet details based on individual vehicles or on a group and can be drilled down as far as the chassis number.

The testing of the VVR is part of the DVLA's intention to make more of its processes digital. It will abolish the paper counterpart licence in June this year. The DVLA was originally intending to abolish the paper counterpart in January, but delayed the move after the BVRLA expressed concern about some of the licence checking functionality the DVLA has put in place.

Fleets should expect a digital service to check driving licences from the DVLA before it abolishes the paper counterpart in June.

Joining the DVLA fleet scheme

Fleets wanting to join the DVLA's fleet scheme can do so for free but need to have more than 50 vehicles in their fleet.

Fleets must provide a formal written request to join the DVLA fleet scheme along with the V5C's of all their vehicles to be included in the scheme.

Once fleets have provided details of their fleet of vehicles to the DVLA, the organisation allocates a fleet number, which is a unique identifier for use with a company's address.

The fleet number is added to all V5Cs of vehicles within that company's fleet. DVLA maintain the fleet list to make sure name, address and contact details are up to date.
