Emissions scandal: UK set to launch emissions probe

Date: 24 September 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The Government is set to launch an investigation into vehicle emissions following the ongoing Volkswagen scandal.

It has also called on the European Union to conduct a Europe-wide investigation into whether car makers have been misleading regulation bodies.

The Government also said the Vehicle Certification Agency will work with manufacturers to re-run lab tests where necessary, comparing the results to 'real-world' emissions levels.

"The Vehicle Certification Agency, the UK regulator, is working with vehicle manufacturers to ensure that this issue is not industry wide," said transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin.

"My priority is to protect the public as we go through the process of investigating what went wrong and what we can do to stop it happening again in the future," he added.

The European Commission also released a statement: "We invite all member states - in addition to the ones who are already doing so - to carry out all the necessary investigations."

"We need to have the full picture of whether and how many vehicles certified in the EU were fitted with defeat devices, which is banned by EU law."

Earlier today, it was revealed that a number of the 11m affected cars are located in Europe, while Volkswagen's CEO, Martin Winterkorn, resigned yesterday.
