European car sales up by 8.4% in first half of 2015, says Jato

Date: 20 July 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

European new car sales increased by 8.4% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2014, Jato Dynamics claimed.

The vehicle data company said more than 7.4 million cars were sold during the first half the year, the highest H1 since 2010, while 25 of 29 markets showed growth in the first half.

Volkswagen is the most popular brand in Europe in terms of sales, with 899,715 cars registered during between January and June this year, up 91.1% on 2014's figure.

The Golf was Europe's best-selling car in H1 2015, with registrations up by 2.2% to 275,848 units, while the biggest volume increase in the top 10 was recorded by the VW Passat, with sales increasing by 39.3% compared to the first half of 2014, thanks to the launch of the new model at the beginning of 2015.

"Confidence in the European market last month was clearly well placed, as the car industry reported strong sales growth for the first half of the year in most markets," said Brian Walters, vice president of data at Jato Dynamics. "Following this strong first-half performance across a diverse range of brands and models, the industry is well placed for a successful second half of the year.".
