Renault has unveiled the brand new Megane medium hatchback, which is set to make its first appearance at the Frankfurt motor show, 20 years after the first model was launched.

The new Megane features a more striking design than the current car and shares a similar style to the Clio and recently revealed Talisman that will be sold outside of the UK. This Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra rival is now 25mm lower than before, with the front wheels pushed 47mm further apart and the rears 39mm, which should make it handle more confidently on the road.

Meanwhile, the two axles have been moved 28mm further apart, to free up space inside for passengers. Renault claims that the Megane's interior now features technology from the class above too, which should give it a luxurious, high quality feel.

The range will be topped by a GT version at launch, which should offer greater power and a more sporty look with a redesigned front bumper, chromed tailpipes and new paint options to separate it from more humble Meganes. It is likely that the French company will also introduce a more focused hardcore Renaultsport model above this, as with the previous generations of the hatchback.

The new Megane will be fully revealed at the Frankfurt motor show latest this month, along with full details of the engines to be available.
