Alfa Romeo has revealed its new Giulia, the Italian firm's rival to the established crop of premium upper medium segment cars such as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Jaguar XE.

Alfa claims "state of the art" engines power the new model, but so far, it has only revealed the range-topping powertrain - a 510hp V6 petrol unit.

The unit is made of aluminum. Alfa Romeo said the next generation of petrol and diesel engines would also be made out of the material.

More details, including other engines, on sale dates and pricing ranges have not been announced. A spokesman for the company told BusinessCar that more information would be revealed in due course, with the car expected on roads early next year.

Alfa claimed the vehicle has the longest wheelbase in its segment to maximise comfort and practicality.

Inside, the main controls have been grouped together on the steering wheel to resemble a Formula One car, while wood and carbon details were chosen "for their visual appeal".

In January, Fiat Group's fleet and used car director Francis Bleasdale admitted that the brand hasn't had the best of times recently in the fleet sector, but said it is about to turn a corner. "We're going to fix Alfa, which has really been treading water from a fleet perspective, and will have the product to take it into the upper medium segment [in 2016]", he told BusinessCar. "Historically, Alfa has not punched at its weight. The 156 and 159 models clearly were at a certain point in time, but as these products ceased to be, Alfa has not been able to do that," he added.
