Toyota has revealed its fourth-generation Prius hybrid ahead of it arriving in the UK early next year.

The Japanese firm has not revealed any technical details yet, but claims the new model "is set to establish new benchmarks in fuel economy, emissions and economy".

The current non-plug-in hybrid model emits 89g/km of CO2 and returns 72.4mpg while the plug-in hybrid variant emits 49g/km of CO2 and returns 134.5mpg.

The new Prius is the first vehicle to be developed using the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which brings a more sophisticated chassis, improving the vehicle's handling and stability, Toyota says.

Safety-wise, Toyota claims the new chassis has been "optimised" for impact performance tests, with a radar cruise control system and a pedestrian detection function being added to the company's pre-crash safety system.

UK pricing, technical information and specifications will be confirmed nearer to the car's on-sale date.
