Volvo has revealed its S90 executive saloon, the replacement for the S80, ahead of its public unveiling at the Detroit motor show next month.
Engine details are thin on the ground at the moment, but the Swedish firm has confirmed it will be equipped with its T8 hybrid unit, which features in its XC90 large 4x4.
In the XC90, the T8 is powered by a 320hp petrol engine and an 87hp electric motor. It emits 49g/km of CO2, returns 134.5mpg and can deliver 26 miles of pure electric range.
Volvo said the S90 will be a "giant leap forward" for the brand, and it is hoping its latest offering will go toe-to-toe with executive rivals, such as the Audi A7 and BMW 5-series.
The S90 will come equipped with a semi-autonomous driving feature, known as Pilot Assist. Volvo said the system will give gentle steering movements to keep the car within lane markings up to 80mph.
Volvo will also introduce a large animal detection system to the S90, meaning it will be capable of detecting animals such as elks, horses and mooses, with part of the system offering warnings and autonomous braking to avoid collisions.
The Swedish company also claimed the new model will come with "one of the most luxuriously appointed interiors and infotainment systems" in its sector.
No details have been revealed about when it will go on sale, but expect more information to be revealed at Detroit next month.
"The S90 has taken a big stride forward in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride," said Peter Mertens, senior vice president of research and development at Volvo.
