Fleet registrations in January were up 3.3% year-on-year, according to the latest Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders figures. Year-to-date, 89,640 fleet vehicles were registered.
 
Total UK car registrations grew by 6.7% in January to 164,856 units, which the SMMT said is the strongest January since 2007.

January also represented the 35th consecutive month of growth in the industry, which the SMMT said is a record growth period.
 
Just over 4500 (4598) alternatively-fuelled vehicles were registered last month, which is up 60.8% on last year's figure of 2859.
 
Ford's Fiesta once again topped the best-sellers list for January, with 8674 vehicles registered. Second was the Vauxhall Corsa with 6879 registrations and the Ford Focus made up the top three with 4824 units registered.
 
Mitsubishi's registrations were up 159% on January 2014. That growth was helped in part by the success of the Outlander PHEV.
 
Maserati also saw significant growth compared to January 2014's figures, growing by 82%, partly thanks to the introduction of a diesel engine into the Ghibli range.
 
The biggest losers were Chrysler (down 50%), Smart (down 33%) and Jaguar (down 26%) on 2014's figures.

"These figures mark an encouraging start to the year after a very strong 2014, with a strikingly robust company car market as businesses take advantage of the attractive finance offers currently available," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

"January saw increased uptake of both petrol and diesel cars, while demand for alternatively-fuelled vehicles continued its surge with registrations rising by 60.8%. Registrations of plug-in vehicles were particularly strong as consumers responded to a greater choice of makes and models delivering lower running costs," said Hawes.
